HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MAIN CHAPTERS

Arable land: cereals and other annual crops
Arable land is a very diverse habitat, covering 1.4 billion hectares. Half of these are cereals, the remaining half consists of various legumes and root crops.

This chapter pays much attention to the intensified European land use and bird protection initiatives, e.g. for the skylark and for Montagu’s harrier (see below). The land use developments outside Europe are covered as well, highlighting – among others – the importance of cereals for cranes in different parts of the world. The chapter also covers the opportunities for birds in non-cereal crops such as sugar beet, sugarcane, alfalfa, cotton. Next to cranes, birds of low-intensity arable land include a range of seedeaters, starlings and even some birds-of-paradise. The chapter decides with a review of the increasing areas of energy crops.
