HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MAIN CHAPTERS
Rice fields
Rice fields cover almost 160 million hectares globally and are found on all continents except Antarctica. However, the production core is in Asia, with 89% of the area.
Wet rice fields represent 15% of the world’s wetlands. And although they are not equivalent to natural wetlands, their importance for birds – especially waterbirds – is substantial. Some rice fields have even been designated as Important Bird Areas.
This chapter takes the reader on a tour from Asian rice fields (focusing on Japan, Korea, China and the Indian subcontinent) to West Africa (various river deltas), Southern Europe and South America, the Caribbean (Cuba) and North America. Separate boxes highlight initiatives for the extremely rare and Endangered crested ibis in China, the sarus crane in India (see below) and a wide range of raptors in West Africa. A separate box is devoted to endemic birds in Hawaiian taro, an inundated root crop.
